The first scientific investigations into the possibility of the ancient Maya observations were carried out by Hutch Kinsman and David Asher and detailed in a paper published in Planetary and Space Science (2017), entitled, “Evidence of Eta Aquariid Outbursts Recorded in the Classic Maya Hieroglyphic SCript Using Orbital Integrations.”
A paper published by the author and astronomer David Asher details possible observations of the Orionid meteor shower by the ancient Maya. Currently the authors are working on documenting possible observations of the Perseid meteor shower by the ancient Maya. Investigations include the use of orbital integrations, a method successfully used by astronomers with annual meteor showers whose orbital parameters of the parent comet are well known.
